Substitution Chart
Have a recipe that calls for something you don't have on hand? Check our substitution chart – you may be able to make it work!
Active Dry Yeast: 1 cake of compressed yeast equals 1 package of active dry yeast
All-purpose Flour: 1 cup of whole-wheat flour can be substituted for 1 cup of all-purpose flour
Apple Pie Spice: Mix together 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg, 1/8 teaspoon of allspice and a dash of ginger to equal 1 teaspoon of apple pie spice
Arrowroot: Equal amounts of cornstarch may be substituted
Baking Powder: 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda plus 1/2 teaspoon of cream of tartar equals 1 teaspoon of baking powder
Barbecue Sauce: Mix together 1 cup ketchup, 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce and 1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional)
Broth, beef: 1 teaspoon beef bouillon granules or 1 beef bouillon cube and 1 cup hot water equals 1 cup broth
Broth, chicken: 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon granules or 1 chicken bouillon cube and 1 cup hot water equals 1 cup broth
Brown Sugar, light: 2/3 cup of dark brown sugar plus 1/3 cup of white granulated sugar equals 1 cup of light brown sugar
Buttermilk: 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar plus enough milk to make 1 cup equals 1 cup of buttermilk
Cake Flour: 1 cup of sifted, all-purpose flour minus 2 tablespoons equals 1 cup of cake flour
